England saw only four matches this weekend as the quarterfinals of the FA Cup took place in parallel.
Chelsea, who came into this weekend atop the Premier League, is still alive in the cup competition, allowing second place Manchester United to move top after their 1-0 win at the Molineux over Wolverhampton Wanderers. United played without Wayne Rooney and got almost no contribution from Dimitar Berbatov, in the rare position of being employed as a lone striker. It was up to Paul Scholes to make sure United got three points, recording his 100th Premier League goal in the 72nd minute, moving United two points clear of Chelsea.
Arsenal moved even on points with Chelsea after their 3-1 win over Burnley, a result that could have been much worse had Nicklas Bendtner converted some of the scoring opportunities created for him. Ultimately, the big Dane’s goals were not needed, the Gunners getting tallies from Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, and Andrei Arshavin. Walctoo had a particularly strong game, bouncing back for a maligned national team performance mid-week, while Fabregas had to leave the match early after tweaking a hamstring.
Everton continued their rousing home form but routing Hull City, 5-1. Mikel Arteta had two goals and the final Everton touch on an own goal. Landon Donovan came on late and added a goal and an assist in one of the more lopsided performances of the Premier League season. The Toffees never appeared to reach high gear in demolishing the Tigers.
Bolton got a command performance from Kevin Davies, who scored the first goal and help set-up the Trotters’ second, Jack Wilshire’s first goal with the club. West Ham had opportunities late to equalize after Alessandro Diamanti’s 88th minute goal – most notably, Junior Stanislas rattled the cross bar with a stoppage time blast. Bolton would get a deserved 2-1 result and vault into thirteenth place.
