Jennifer: Thank you. Your blog is great (fromaleftwing.blogspot.com), and I have a great affinity for both the regional and cultural perspective there. I hope you stay in touch. It would be great to continue hearing from you.

Thank you so very much for this. I do try to follow international women's soccer, and have been really disturbed by the FIFA award. It was great to listen to such a detailed and informed discussion of the international game!

I thought Inka Grings deserved the award. I was pretty upset when Marta won again. How could you not give the award to Grings.
-Making her way back onto the team with I think 9 goals this year from a 3 year absence of the German WNT is great.
-Winning the German Women's cup (DFB-Pokal) with her team FCR 2001 Duisburg.
-German Female Footballer of the year 2009.
-Women's European Championship winner.
-Top scorer of the Women's European Championship (6 goals)
-08-09 UEFA Women's Cup champion with FCR 2001 Duisburg

I agree Cirdan, though I had my piece on the pod. I would have been fine with Grings, too, but all the issues that Shek raised have been putting my feelings for this award aside until we can have a more intelligent way of determining candidates and the cases for them. That may seem harsh, but when you look at the history of almost any major sporting award, the early periods have these kind of hiccups.

I believe there are good arguments for Marta, she did win the US regular season, golden boot and a couple of cups in Brazil. As you pointed out, it's virtually impossible to actually follow a lot of games in womens football, club football in particular, but by stats alone, Martas season has been pretty spectacular.

On the other hand I completely agree with Shek about Prinz - she was injured for a huge part of the season, her club - despite being the richest in Germany and probably all of Europe and filled with stars - didn't do much in Europe and only finished 4th in Germany, and in the new season again is far from the title race, and in the Euro, Germanys attack was also carried by Grings, not Prinz.
